The Clear Lake Golf Course was built in two stages commencing in 1928. Renowned architect Stanley Thompson may have played a part in designing the first nine holes. The back nine followed quickly in the early 1930’s and was designed by Park Superintendent Smart and greens keeper Vic Creed. The complete course was open for play in the spring of 1934. Relief Workers during the Great Depression supplied labor for the back nine, and at the time the green fees were set at fifty cents. An annual golfing membership was available for husband and wife for the princely sum of $15.00 per couple. The Golf Professional for the day was well-known Johnnie Lawrence who continued in that capacity for 43 years until his retirement in 1976. Local tradespeople built the Clubhouse, which is registered as a Heritage Building, in 1933. |
